Will Cloutier knew, early on, while attending Boys Trade, that he wanted to run his own company. Watching his dad set type at the Worcester Telegram and Gazette had a big impact on the impressionable Will. He saw the beauty in the art of composition and he loved it. “That's for me!”, he said.

Will and George O’Malley formed COMP (Cloutier & O’Malley Photocomposition), on September 9th, 1979...working from the basement of Will’s Charlton home.

The modest surroundings of COMP’s first location was in no way indicative of the quality of typesetting produced. A quarter century of typographic experience backed up every project passing through the Charlton basement. Working with impossible deadlines, staying ahead of industry trends, guiding first time customers through the sometimes complex world of typography, COMP soon developed a reputation of quality and a client base that exceeded the confines of Will’s basement.

In 1982, Will became the sole owner and in May of that year, moved the company to the second floor of 80 Webster Street in Worcester.

Growth was steady from 1982 through 1988. This period saw the progression towards desktop publishing and the addition of Postscript® devices.

During the early 90’s more Postscript® devices were added and COMP began to output files to RC paper and film from their clients disks.

From 1994 - 1998 COMP invested heavily into digital scanning and large format, film output devices, adding electronic imposition for printers and agencies. Electronic retouching, digital Rainbows® color proofs and building electronic files all became part of COMP’s extended services.
